I first encountered Aaron Travis through one of John Preston’s anthologies, where Preston described Travis’s story "Blue Light" as a classic of gay erotica. Later, when doing research on Drummer, a gay leather magazine noted for its literary quality, I learned that Travis had done a two-year stint as fiction editor of the magazine. Not long afterwards, someone told me that, under his real name, Steven Saylor, Travis had written a popular series of novels about a detective in Ancient Rome.

I’ve never read Saylor’s mysteries, but judging from the quality of the writing in _The Flesh Fables_, I ought to.
